Lawry's Chili Seasoning Mix - Copycat Recipe

Ice storms can lead to creativity - especially when you've already made the slippery drive to the grocery store one time only to discover that you lack chili seasoning mix at home.

What's a girl to do?

Google like crazy to find a copycat recipe for the family favorite Lawry's chili seasoning mix. Fail miserably so begin experimenting instead.

The following is very close to the real deal. Enough that we'll probably go homemade on our seasoning mix from now on, tweaking proportions slightly for our own favorite blend.

Lawry's Chili Seasoning Mix - Shannah's Copycat recipe
  • 1 T flour
  • 1.5 t chili powder
  • 1 t cocoa powder
  • 3/4 t salt
  • 3/4 t minced onion
  • 1/2 t cumin
  • 1/4 t garlic powder
  • 1/4 t onion powder
PS - the back of the Lawry's chili seasoning mix packet says that it includes oregano as well. Oregano upsets my stomach much of the time, so we don't keep it in the house and it's not included in my recipe above.

Don't give me a hard time about the beans - I'm not a native Texan!

  1. Thank you so much for this recipe! I use it at least once a month. One of these days I'll actually write it down. :-)

  3. A million years ago, my mom used to make this 2-3 times a month with red kidney beans. Do you know of a 1960s recipe using the lawry's packet? Not what anyone would call "authentic" but comfort food :)
