The Great Debate

I have been mocked for my strong feelings on sweet potatoes. Personally, I don't find this a joking matter at all.

Here's the question: How do you like your holiday sweet potatoes?

I'm not talking about sweet potatoes for your average meal. We like mashed sweet potatoes and baked sweet potatoes for standard fare. But the holidays require a slightly more decadent and unhealthy version on the table.

1. Struesel-topped sweet potato casserole. Brown sugar, pecans and unsweetened mashed sweet potatoes. Lightly broiled until warm throughout and crusty on top. This is my favorite - it's delicious!

2. Marshmallow-topped sweet potato casserole. Mini marshmallows, toasted and gooey, on top of warm mashed sweet potatoes. I personally find this casserole to be of the devil. I like mini marshmallows in fruit salad and hot chocolate, but not on sweet potatoes.

3. Glazed sweet potatoes. Chunks of sweet potatoes, glazed with syrup (simple or maple), baked until tender. The simplicity appeals to me...as long as the glazing is on the light side.

The Boy likes them prepared any of these ways. I have friends who prefer #3. One of my sisters likes #1. My sister-in-law is firmly committed to #2. Yet other family members won't touch sweet potatoes no matter how they are prepared.

So - how do you like your holiday sweet potatoes?

  1. Baked with just a tad of pure maple syrup--but only at Thanksgiving. Otherwise, oven-roasted fries with a little sea salt.

  2. I think I'd go along with Sheryl on this. We have sweet potatoes here so often that I'm to the point of passing them up (such as today!). I like sweet potato fries though and I notice most others in the dining room do also. I got burned out on the marshmallow covered topping a long time ago.
The chef here must have gone somewhere today far away and left meal prep to learners. Frankly, it was awful. I'd have gladly settled for a Subway.

  3. Oh no! I'm sad you didn't have your regular chef today...

I am in complete agreement with you ladies. Fancy sweet potatoes are for Thanksgiving (and Christmas) only. Our preferred sweet potato styles are fries or baked with a light sprinkling of cinnamon.

  4. I am all over the mashed sweet potatoes. I LOVE them not mashed but mashing them just makes the holidays seem like the holidays. This Thanksgiving, I made them mashed and just topped them with brown sugar. That was it. Yummy!!
