Lime Time

It's spring and - despite the crazy freezes - it's citrus time again! I found a delightful recipe for "Brazilian Lemonade" on Our Best Bites. The recipe isn't lemonade at all, it's a sweet-tart limeade and is oh-so-good.

Brazilian Lemonade
  • 4 juicy limes (thin skinned) or 2 bags of key limes
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 cups water
  • 6 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
Mix cold water and sugar thoroughly and chill until ready to use. Wash limes with dishwashing soap. The soap removes wax and pesticides from the limes. Don't skip this step.


Cut the ends off the limes, then cut each lime into eighths. I used key limes, so I only needed to cut them into fourths. Place half of the limes in the blender and add half of the sugar water.


Cover blender and pulse five times. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a pitcher and pour the blended mixture through the strainer. Use a spoon to press the rest of the liquid into the pitcher. Dump the pulp and rinds into the strainer into the trash.


Repeat with remaining limes and sugar water. Add sweetened condensed milk. Blend well. Taste test to make sure the mixture isn't bitter - if it is, add more sugar and/or more milk.


If you're feeling frisky, add a little tequila for an amazing homemade margarita. Either loaded or unloaded, you'll definitely want to serve this over plenty of ice.

  1. How funny to read your post today. All the restuarants serve this drink here minus the tequila. By the way the official name for your drink is translated as Swiss limeade.Don't know why they call it that but Brazilians drink a ton of it. You can also use any citrus fruit and add the sweetened condensed milk. I don't think they use other kinds of fruit. I've seen it with the different types of oranges we have.

  2. By the way, don't throw away the lime rinds & pulp! Put them through the disposal with warm running water. The lime oils will remove built-up fats and junk on your garbage disposal blades and leave behind a fresh scent, too.
